A Patient Administration System (PAS) is the core operational system that manages a hospital's non-clinical patient information: registration, demographics, admissions, discharges and transfers (ADT), outpatient appointments, and waiting lists. Historically among the first information systems that hospitals adopted, the PAS holds the master record of who a patient is and where they are within the organisation. It supplies the patient identifiers and demographic data on which clinical systems such as the EHR, PACS, and laboratory information systems depend, and it underpins much of the administrative and reporting activity of a healthcare organisation. In many hospitals the PAS has progressively been absorbed into a broader EHR, or integrated with clinical systems through interoperability standards, rather than running as a wholly separate system.
