NHS Federated Data Platform uses AI to predict A&E demand

An AI tool on the NHS FDP combines weather forecasts, admission histories, and day-of-week trends to predict surges in emergency department demand so trusts can pre-plan staffing, beds, and capacity.

Hospitals in England are using an AI tool on the NHS Federated Data Platform to predict when accident-and-emergency departments will be busiest. The system combines real-time and historical data (Met Office temperature forecasts, hospital admission patterns, day-of-week trends) and produces an expected demand curve for the coming hours and days. NHS England reports the tool is now available to 123 hospital trusts and forecasts admissions roughly twice as accurately as a baseline comparison model, having been co-developed with nine pilot trusts.

The intended use is operational rather than clinical: matching staffing, shift patterns, bed capacity, and urgent treatment resources to the expected surge rather than responding after attendances have risen. The FDP itself has been politically contested since its 2023 procurement, so a concrete demonstration of operational value is a useful test of whether the platform meets its stated aims.
